正確に言いますと、バラッドの “The Elfin Knight” から謎々の部分だけが独立した歌で、物語歌ではありません。しかし、チャイルドは謎々のみの “The Cambrick Shirt” [Gammer Gurton’s Garland (1810) 版] もChild 2Gとして含めています。矛盾した言い方になりますが、「チャイルド・バラッド」ではあるけれども「バラッド」ではない、となりましょう。歌詞はシャープの民謡集（Yorkshire 版かもしれません）からとのことで、Simon & Garfunkel 版とは少し違いがあります（歌詞等は以下参照）。

あまりバラッドらしくないですが、しばしば “The Two Magicians” [Child 44] から派生した歌と考えられていますので、ここに入れておきます（チャイルドはこの歌に言及していません）。ブロンソンは Child 44 として扱っています。初出は Samuel Lover の小説 Rory O'More: A National Romance ([1836], 1851, p. 60) の中に書かれた４連の歌詞（"Oh! If all the young maidens was blackbirds and thrishes”）ですが、ラヴァーの作ではないでしょう（書き換えかもしれませんが）。コリンズ版は “O Sally, My Dear” とも呼ばれるイングランド南部のヴァージョンのようです。歌詞等は以下にあります。

新旧約の『聖書』ではなくて外典の「偽マタイ福音書 (The Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew)」 に載っている話です（ただし、イエスは赤ん坊で、木は palm tree です）。バラッドだけではなくイギリスの民衆劇でもこの逸話が演じられました。木はイギリスで cherry tree に変わったようです（その土地の動植物に替えられるのは、イソップ寓話の「蟻と蝉」→「蟻とキリギリス」の例と同じことです）。

「バーバラ・アレン」は特にヴァージョンが多くて、旋律を聞くとほとんど別の歌と言ってもよいくらいに違いが大きいです。イングランドの通俗版（"In Scarlet town, where I was born” で始まる）がよく知られていますが、コリンズの旋律は James Johnson, The Scots Musical Museum, vol. III (1790; no. 221: “Bonny Barbara Allan”; 歌詞はChild 84A) に収録された版で、主にスコットランドで歌われてきた旋律 (Bronson, The Traditional Tunes of the Child Ballads, vol. II, no. 84 の Group B）です。ハイドンのスコットランド歌謡の編曲（before 1792）は Johnson版に基づいていますし、Ewan MacColl の “Bawbee Allan” もこの旋律に似ています。また、コリンズの歌詞は Johnson版に類似しています（ただし、イングランド英語）。しかし、なぜか「バーバラ・アレン」を吹き込んでいるスコットランド人は少なく、“Bonny Barbara Allan” の題も一般的ではありません。

コリンズとローマックスはこの歌の印刷版が見つからなかったと言いますが、Hyland's Mammoth Hibernian Songster (Chicago, 1901, pp. 97-98) に8連から成る "Bonny Irish Boy" が掲載されています（冒頭の2行などが同じ歌詞ですので、同系統でしょう）。女は男の後を追ってアメリカ中を探し回り、とうとう見つけて結ばれる、という話です。以下では、男が他の女と結婚したことを知って、失恋の痛手で死亡するとなっています。コリンズ版のたった2連の歌のほうが、たとえ物語は「不完全」でも、出来がよいと思います。

上記のTraditional Ballad Index に限らず、Roud Folksong Index (ROUD #1206); folktrax (http://folktrax-archive.org/ ); Kennedy, Folksongs of Britain & Ireland (1975, no. 224) などもこぞって Copper 版（[1936], 1955）よりも古い記録を載せていませんが、以下のブロードサイドが先祖です。どうやら100年以上にわたって口頭伝承されてきたようです。印刷文化と口頭伝承はそれほど敵対的な関係にはありませんでした。
