日本バラッド協会

フランキー・アームストロング（1941年生まれ）はイングランドのフォーク・シンガーです。1950年代後半から活動してきました。ファースト・ソロ・アルバムの Lovely on the Water (1972) ⁽¹⁾ を初めとして、多くのバラッドを歌い続けていました。また、全編をチャイルド・バラッドのみで構成したアルバム⁽²⁾も出しました。

他にも "The Old Man from Lee"; "Old Shiboots and Leggings" などとさまざまなタイトルがあります。一見すると年寄りを揶揄した歌ですが、関連する版のフィールド録音を聞きますと年寄りたちも歌っていますので一概にそうとも言えません。Ramsay, Tea-Table Miscellany (1724; 1750, vol. 1, pp. 117-18; "The Young Lass contra Auld Man") を初めとして、多くの伝承版が記録されてきました（Roud Folksong Index (Roud #362) には147点の記録があります；ただし、重複あり）。しかし、チャイルド先生のお気に召さなかったようで、彼のバラッド集に載っていません。以下を参照。
