(1) 語彙・文法・発音

バラッドの語彙は Oxford English Dictionary でも十分に対応できないことがある。しかし、多くのバラッド集には注または glossary が付いているし、チャイルドの glossary （以下参照）は役に立つことが多い。また、各地域別の方言辞典や語彙集が Internet Archive および Google Book Search にある。

民話のタイプ、モチーフにはアールネ=トンプソンのタイプ・インデックス（Antti Amatus Aarne and Stith Thompson, The Types of the Folktale, 2nd rev., 1961) およびトンプソンのモチーフ・インデックス（Motif-Index of Folk-Literature）が、また英米のみではErnest W. Baughman, Type and Motif Index of the Folktales of England and North America (1966) があるが、バラッドはそれほど詳しくない。チャイルド・バラッドのモチーフについては Natascha Wu¨rzbach and Simone M. (4) バラッドの音楽

チャイルドには少数の楽譜が付いてはいるが、それは「見本」程度であって、引用先のテクストに楽譜が付いていても収録しなかった（楽譜があることも記述していない）。Loomis House からの「訂正版」The English and Scottish Popular Ballads（3 巻まで刊行中）ではチャイルドが省いた楽譜を組み入れている。バラッドの音楽面の研究は Cecil J. Sharp などから始る。しかし、バラッドのみに特有の音楽というものはないので、特徴等は民謡全般と共通する。資料集成としては Bertrand Harris Bronson, The Traditional Tunes of the Child Ballads (4 vols.) が欠かせない。この編者Bronson には The Ballad As Song (1969) という論文集があり、バラッド音楽、歌詞と曲との相互依存などを扱っている。R. D. Abrahams and George Foss, Anglo-American Folksong Style (1968); J. W. Hendren, A Study of Ballad Rhythm: With Special Reference to Ballad Music (1936; rpt. 1966) も参考になる。音声資料を使って歌唱スタイルなどを論じたものに Charles Seeger, ed., Versions and Variants of Barbara Allen (Library of Congress, AAFS L54) [LP] があるが CD は出ていない。伝承的なバラッド歌唱では、ダルシマー（mountain dulcimer）などの楽器を伴奏にすることはあるが、概して無伴奏であった。録音資料については以下の「VIII. バラッドの音声資料」および Discography を参照。リヴァイヴァルなどの非伝承的歌唱については「情報広場」の「音と映像のバラッド」にいろいろある。

(5) バラッドの歌い手たち

チャ イルドを初めとして初期の研究者たちはテクスト中心であって、伝承者にはそれほど関心がなかった（主に女性が伝承に関わってきたとは言っているし、提供者 の名前を載せてはいるが）。しかし、スコットとジェイミソンにバラッドを提供したブラウン夫人（Mrs. Brown of Falkland）は有名で、Bronson, The Ballad as Song; Buchan, The Ballad and the Folk ではそれぞれ１章を彼女に充てているし、論文もいくつかある（たとえば、Flemming G. Andersen and Thomas Pettitt, “Mrs. Brown of Falkland: A Singer of Tales?” The Journal of American Folklore, Vol. 92, No. 363 (1979), pp. 1-24）。現代の歌い手では、James Porter and Herschel Gower, Jeannie Robertson: Emergent Singer, Transformative Voice (Univ of Tennessee Pr, 1995); Roger D. Abrahams, A Singer and Her Songs: Almeda Riddle Book of Ballads (Louisiana State Univ Pr, 1970) あるいはEdward D. Ives の一連の著作（Larry Gorman: The Man Who Made the Songs, 1964; Lawrence Doyle: The Farmer-Poet of Prince Edward Island, 1971; Joe Scott: The Woodsman Songmaker, 1978）などを参照されたい（もちろん録音を聞くことも必要である）。しばしば研究者・収集者はバラッドのみに関心をよせるが、バラッドを得意とする歌 い手はいても、バラッドしか歌わない人はいないし（たとえば、シャープのアパラチア民謡集と資料提供者の一人であったJane Hicks Gentry のレパートリーについてはBetty N. Smith, Jane Hicks Gentry: A Singer Among Singers (U of Kentucky Pr, 1998）を参照)、伝承曲と流行歌謡の区別も認識していない。リヴァイヴァル歌手自身の言葉としては、Frankie Armstrong (with editorial assistance from Brian Pearson), "On Singing Child Ballads" (in Tom Cheesman and Sigrid Rieuwerts, eds., Ballads into Books: The Legacies of Francis James Child, Peter Lang, 1999) など。
